History of Joshimath

Katyuri kings dominated the region to varied degrees between the 7th and 11th century C.E. from their capital in Kumaon's "Katyur" valley (today's Baijnath). Vashudev Katyuri established the Katyuri dynasty. Vasu Dev is credited for building the antecedent Joshimath Basdeo temple. Vasu Dev was originally a Buddhist, but eventually adopted Brahminical practices. The Brahminical practices of the Katyuri monarchs in general are frequently credited to an active Adi Shankara campaign (788-820 CE).

Joshimath was the Katyur dynasty's first capital, and they afterwards moved to Kartikeyapur, according to Badari dutt pande, who wrote about it in his book "kumaon ka itihas"(modern day Baijnath). God Narsingh was a favorite of King Vasudev. He was out hunting one day when Lord Narsingh, disguised, entered his home and his wife gave the god food. The god entered the king's room to relax after eating. After witnessing a guy lying in his bed when the king returned from hunting, he became enraged and used his sword to sever the left hand of the god. The wound began to bleed milk rather than blood. After witnessing this, the king realized the person in disguise was not a regular person. He prayed to the god for pardon. The god claimed to have come because he was content with his kingdom, but following this incident, he is forbidding the king from remaining in his current location (Baijnath), and because of the wound, the statue in the temple will eventually develop a weak left hand, which will spell the end of his dynasty. In the eleventh century AD, the Panwar dynasty replaced the Katyuri kings.
