List of Indonesia Provinces and Capitals

Written and Fact-checked by | Last Updated On: May 22, 2026

Indonesia is a diverse country consisting of 34 provinces. Here is a list of the provinces in Indonesia as of my knowledge cutoff in September 2021:

Indonesia is a massive Southeast Asian archipelago stretching between the Indian and Pacific Oceans. The country is made up of more than 17,000 islands and is divided into 38 provinces, which are further divided into regencies and cities for local administration. Jakarta is the national capital and also the largest urban area in Indonesia.

The country covers tropical rainforests, volcanic mountains, coral islands, dense cities, farming regions, and remote highlands spread across Asia and Oceania. Every province has its own mix of languages, food, traditions, and landscapes, from crowded Java to the forests of Papua and the islands of Maluku.
